Stockport blues/rock band, 'The Badgers', will be playing at The Swan again after making their debut here last year.
Since then, the band has been through a few personel changes and the gig will feature new drummer, John Wallwork. John has been playing since the sixties and played with Geoff & Phil in The Blues Widows and Eric & The Frantics in the early nineties. John also plays in Rock Back The Clock, one of the North West’s top rock ‘n’ roll bands. www.rockbacktheclock.co.uk
John joins founder members, Geoff Rees, guitar & Phil Cawsey, bass/vocals.
The band play classic tracks from the late sixties/early seventies in their own, inimitable style.
If you are of a 'certain age' like the band, you'll be sure to recognise the numbers and enjoy a rockin' trip down Memory Lane.
The Badgers play a couple of originals and covers by bands such as; Spencer Davis Group, Free, The Stones, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Cream and Lynyrd Skynyrd.
So come on down to The Swan on the 25th for a night to remember!
More information about The Badgers can be found on our directory or their website badgersband.co.uk

The regular Jazz night at the Swan continues to go from strength to strength and the next session on the 26 May should be a stormer.
The feature for the night is Manchester saxohphonist Ed Kainyek. A stalwart of the jazz scene Ed has a reputation as one of Manchester’s hardest working horn players. Primary influences include Dexter Gordon & Charlie Parker but truly Ed has a voice of his own and with each solo makes his own statement. The bass chair will be taken by Gavin Barras another superstar of the Manchester Jazz scence who performs with the award winning group 6PAC. Gavin recently moved from Manchester to join us in the hills and now resides in Glossop.
There will also be an interesting twist to the night when Chris Hillman guests on Pedal Steel. If you've never heard Jazz played on a pedal steel before then you're missing out!

The first jazz night on the 31 March was well attended. The guitar duo of Andy Hulme & Bennet Longman was perfect for the intimate setting of the main bar. A mixture of up-tempo standards and lyrically performed ballads were well received. As usual some very nice food laid on by Nicola and Roxy. Thanks to all who came - remember to tell your friends about the good time you had and the quality of the music. Spread the word and help this night grow.
For our regular Jazz spot on Wednesday 28 April we have a trio featuring Manchester based Tenor Sax player Sam Lewis. Don't let Sam's relative youth fool you, he has a mature sound that tells of his breadth of experience as a player.
At 25, Sam has been playing the sax for more than half his life, he is well experienced and passionate about many styles, and a number of other instruments. Among other acts from the Manchester area, Sam can often be heard playing with reggae/dub/jazz outfit "Extra Love" at Matt & Phreds or as a sideman to local trumpeter Neil Yates. Sam has much experience working within small jazz groups and big bands. Formally playing 1st tenor in the Salford University Big Band during his time there. He recently graduated with a 1st class honours degree specialising in jazz performace and studio engineering / production. Since leaving univesity, Sam's musical career is moving from strength to strength as his local reputation grows. Sam strives to take a lyrical and melodic approach to his improvisation and performance, he states John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Dexter Gordon and Michael Brecker as his main influences.
We are also privileged to have the imitable Dave Turner on double bass for our April date. Dave is one of the best and most in-demand bass players in the North West, he not only underpins the rhythm section but is an excellent soloist.
Bennet Longman will host the night and take the guitar chair as usual. If you are a musician and interested in sitting in with the band for a number please speak to Bennet on the night. From the next session in May onwards we plan to start working an open section into the night and would like to speak to those interested in playing.
We are on facebook where you can see more photos and listen to some recordings from past performances: www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=103594276343806

Tim Scott is a virtuoso guitarist with a twist, playing a 90 minute live set of his awe inspiring Guitar mashing to pop slick backing tracks.
Tim Scott is a rising star of the music industry. The release of his extraordinary debut album 'Bald On The Inside' signalled the start of his career as a virtuoso guitarist of some note. With 'Guitarist' magazine describing it as '...world-class stuff...'
Challenging the establishment on how music should be played and heard has led Tim to playing live in Night Clubs alongside DJ's. The supreme gig of which has to be playing alongside Judge Jules in Ibiza during the Radio 1 events in 2005/2006.
Other accolades include playing alongside DJ Jon Fitz, The Body Rockers - 'I like the way you move', Abigail Bailey - 'I Just Can't Get Enough', all live on Galaxy Radio.

A Haiti Earthquake and Oxfam Trailwalker fundraising night at The Swan Hotel in New Mills on the 12 March was a great success.
A massive turnout and support from a number of local businesses raised over £650 for the two causes. The night was organised by Bennet Longman, guitarist in New Mills based band The Groove Diggers, and Will Griffin of Blues Party. They would like to thank everyone who attended and helped create a great atmosphere.
Other special thanks go to Nick and Lisa of the Entertainment Centre in New Mills who dropped in the following day with a generous and surprise donation after an enjoyable evening.
The Swan on Buxton Rd, New Mills changed hands at the beginning of this year and is fast becoming the venue of choice for live music in the area. Many of the staff are talented musicians themselves.

On the last Wednesday of each month the Swan will host a Jazz & Blues performance. This night delivers a variety of top quality jazz music to the residents of the High Peak. Unique in this area, the night draws from a rich seam of local and national talent and delivers them to your doorstep!
The opening night is on the 31 March and will feature a guitar duo showcasing the sublime jazz guitarist Andy Hulme, seen right. As a professional player Andy has worked all over the world including New York. He draws inspiration from Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass and many other great jazz guitarists. The emphasis is on considered arrangements of popular jazz standards and a lyrical style of improvisation with subtle harmonic twists.
Although not a Jam Session the night has an open and friendly atmosphere. If you are player then talk to Bennet Longman, who runs the night, about possibilities for sitting in.
Local opportunities for hearing live Jazz & Blues in our area are few and far between. If you love music then support this night and watch it grow. You can be part of something great in the High Peak.
